Deliveries of Handmade Items
Sew4Service accepts donations of fabric, yarn, sewing supplies and finished handmade items. We use some of the donated supplies to make kits available to volunteers to take home and complete the finished item. Finished items are brought back to Sew4Service for delivery to local agencies in need of these items. Space is needed to sort and store donated items as well as space for volunteers to cut fabric and assemble charity kits. Examples of charity kits include: quilts, pillowcases, market bags, dress-up capes, fidget quilts, crocheted-edge fleece blankets, baby items, pet blankets, and soap sacks.
Many social services agencies, hospitals, nursing homes and homeless shelters request handmade items like quilts, crocheted and knitted blankets, tote bags, pillowcases, baby items, pet blankets in order to provide comfort and support for their clients. These handmade items provide a tangible expression of love and peace for those receiving these items during difficult times in their lives. Cutting, assembling, and providing the charity kits for volunteers to make handmade items at home extends the volunteer base from which we receive donated finished items. Some volunteers want to help others through their sewing talents, but need assistance cutting the fabric. This is also a good way to use donated fabrics, upcycling them as they are diverted from a landfill.

Sewing and Crocheting Open Studio
Sewing and Crocheting Open Studio is a maker space that provides access to supplies and support for those working on personal sewing or crocheting projects. Each Open Studio is staffed by an experienced sewing and crocheting coach who can work one-on-one with attendees to offer advice and provide technical support when using the sewing machines or supplies.
People of all ages can enjoy engaging in creative pursuits such as sewing and crocheting, but there can be barriers that prevent them from fully participating in these activities. Owning, storing, and maintaining sewing machines can be too expensive for many. Our Open Studio space removes these barriers by providing access not only to machines but to highly experienced coaches who can assist with sewing/crochet projects. This mentorship is often essential for anyone who is eager to learn new skills or techniques. By providing these resources, our Open Studios enable participants to grow their skills, engage in problem solving activities, and build confidence in their creative endeavors.
Budget For one 4-hour open studio session:
Space Rental: $50
Sewing Coach Fee: $200
Supplies / Maintenance: $50
Total Cost for one session: $300
Up to 10 sessions each month, for 12 months: $36,000

Library Classes
Sew4Service Teachers offer a variety of classes that can be taught as part of library programming. We provide beginner classes such as Learn to Use Your Sewing Machine, Learn to Crochet, Learn to Knit as well as intermediate level classes like Amigurumi Crochet, Slow Stitching, and Sew a Pillowcase. These classes usually fill up the day they are listed on the library website.
In order to make these classes more accessible to libraries with limited budgets, we are seeking grant support to cover the cost of these classes. Libraries usually do not charge their patrons to attend their programming and so are limited as to how many and which programs they can bring to their branches, based on their programming budget. By receiving grant support for these sewing and crocheting classes, libraries can stretch their budget to include more programming for their patrons.
Budget
Average class length: 2hrs
Teacher cost per class: $100
Material cost per class: $50
Average of one class per week: 50 classes per year
Total Program Cost: $7,500

Sewing Classes for Kids
Sew4Service collaborates with community centers and schools to offer sewing programs for kids and families. Sometimes we offer a short term program with a specific goal, and other times we meet weekly with groups to build sewing skills over time. Projects include kid friendly instructions and fabrics, and can be finished in a short amount of time. Our sewing classes focus on fundamental skills while completing a project to take home. Practical projects include a pillow, pillowcase, tote bag, drawstring bag, small pouch, book mark, gift card, journal cover, small quilt, fleece poncho, and more. We include hand sewing as well as machine sewing in our projects. We provide all the materials needed for the program including fabric and sewing machines.
Sewing, whether by hand or with a sewing machine, is a valuable skill for practical mending purposes, but also for a creative outlet which is important for overall health. Sewing skills are a very important life long skill, something that is not always included in the school curriculum, and so these sewing programs fill that gap. Schools and community centers do not always have the physical resources or experienced teachers to provide sewing programs, so grant support for this program ensures that kids have access to sewing machines and experienced teachers to develop their sewing skills.

Special Requests
Sometimes agencies are in need of specific items, sewn to specific measurements or with specific materials, that are not regularly made by our volunteers. We design a pattern, sew a test item, and have the item approved by the requesting agency. We then send out the pattern to our volunteers and ask them to make these items until we have fulfilled the request. Depending on the requirements for the special item, we may have to purchase materials that are not regularly donated to Sew4Service. These specialty items greatly benefit the agency because they may be hard to purchase commercially and they meet the agency's specific needs.
Sometimes an agency will request a large number of a specific item, which we work to fulfill during several sewing workshops. A sewing workshop is a time when we invite volunteers to come and sew items that have been requested by an agency. A sewing workshop is led by a staff member who is able to guide volunteers on the specific requirements for the requested project, and provide the appropriate supplies to be used by the volunteers.
Budget:
Each Special Project could cost between $400 - $4000.
We are seeking funding for up to 5 special request projects, up to $20,000.
