Sewing with Jenny

Jenny will share a fun and skill-building sewing class that features a new project each month.

Service Description

Each month, Jenny will share a fun and skill-building sewing class that features a “project” that we will finish in class. Bring your own machine, or reserve one of ours. You will need a basic sewing kit such as scissors, seam ripper, pins, marking tool, bobbins, extra needles, etc. Classes will be suitable for new to intermediate sewists unless otherwise noted. April: Market Totes In this class we will make simple, unlined tote bags using salvaged/recycled fabrics. This is a perfect class to learn basic construction- and this is the pattern for the totes that Sew4Service makes to donate to the community. You’ll want to make few for yourself and to give away! May: Sewing Basics: Meet Your Machine Bring your machine and Jenny will give you a guided tour of your machine. Go over basic parts/terminology, feet and their uses, how to thread, bobbin winding, and a tour of stitches. This is a perfect opportunity to dig your machine out of the closet and give it a go! We will work on a mug rug so you will have a small project to show off. May: Flannel Napkins Using a domestic sewing machine, we will make cute and functional napkins out of flannel material that also double as paper towels or even swiffer cloths! Reduce your paper towel waste and save money!! The serger will be available for participants to try out as well. Six spots available. June: Gift Sacks Reduce your contribution to landfills and ditch the wrapping paper! Instead, sew up these cute and reusable drawstring gift sacks that you can personalize for birthdays or holidays. With only one snip and 4 seams, even novice sewists can make these like a pro. August: Fabric Postcards Do you love qulting so much you wish you could send one throughthe mail? YOU CAN! Using fusible webbing and simple sewing, we will create simple mini works of art. This is a techniques-based class, so you may not finish in one sitting. But you’ll leave confident in how to create your own mailable art. October/November: Sweatshirt Jackets 1 & 2 This is a 2 part class in which we’ll transform a sweatshirt into the coolest jacket you’ll ever own! In part one, we’ll prep our materials and start our design. In class 2, we’ll reconstruct the jacket using the panels you’ve made at home. You will need a sweatshirt 2 sizes larger than you usually wear- and bonus points if it’s thrifted!
