Five Years of Learning, Creating and Serving Together
Five years ago, Sew4Service began with a simple but powerful idea: donated fabric, yarn and sewing supplies could be transformed into something meaningful. Materials that might otherwise be discarded could become quilts, blankets, baby supplies, pet items and other handmade gifts for people and animals in need.

That idea has grown into a vibrant, service-minded community where people learn new skills, share their creativity, build friendships and make a tangible difference throughout Northeast Ohio.
During our first five years, Sew4Service has:
Collected approximately 6,250 bags and boxes of donated supplies
Recorded more than 106,000 volunteer hours
Engaged 765 volunteers in person and at home
Provided donations to 110 nonprofit and community agencies
Created and delivered more than 18,000 handmade items
These numbers tell an impressive story, but our impact is about much more than numbers. It is about the people who donated supplies, the volunteers who gave their time, the students who learned new skills, the customers who supported our stores, the agencies that helped us identify community needs and the financial supporters who made our growth possible.
Transforming Donated Materials
During our first five years, Sew4Service received approximately 6,250 bags and boxes of donated fabric, yarn, sewing machines and other textile-arts supplies. That is enough donated material to fill approximately three full-size semi-trailers.

These materials have been diverted from landfills and given new purpose. Volunteers use many of the donated supplies to create quilts, blankets, baby items, pet supplies and other handmade donations for local nonprofit and community agencies.
Other donated materials are sold through our Fabric Stash thrift stores at reasonable prices. This gives fabric, yarn, sewing equipment and crafting supplies a second life while making them more affordable and accessible to community members. Proceeds from our stores also help support Sew4Service’s educational programs, volunteer opportunities and charitable work.
We also accept donations of sewing machines and machine accessories. Our trained technicians examine, clean and, whenever possible, repair donated machines. Some are placed in our sewing studios for classes and volunteer projects. Others are donated to community agencies or sold through our Fabric Stash stores, providing people with affordable access to sewing machines that have been inspected and are in good working order. Machines that cannot be repaired may be used for replacement parts or responsibly recycled.

Community members can also bring their own sewing machines to Sew4Service for maintenance and repair. This provides an affordable local option for machine service and helps people keep their existing equipment working properly so they can sew confidently at home.
Every donation represents more than fabric, yarn, equipment or sewing supplies. It represents creative possibilities, environmental responsibility, affordable access to textile arts and an opportunity to serve someone in our community.
An Extraordinary Gift of Time
Our volunteers recorded more than 106,000 hours of service during our first five years. That is the equivalent of approximately 51 years of full-time work.

Those hours include sewing, quilting, crocheting, knitting, sorting donations, preparing kits, organizing supplies, teaching classes, completing projects at home, helping in our stores and delivering finished items to community agencies.
Some volunteers work individually at one of our chapters, sewing handmade items or helping sort, organize and prepare donated materials. Others volunteer from home by picking up fabric, yarn or prepared kits and returning the completed items for delivery to our agency partners.
We also organize large-group service projects for schools, businesses, corporations and other community organizations. Participants work together on meaningful projects while learning basic sewing and textile-arts skills. These experiences give people who may have never used a sewing machine an opportunity to learn something new while creating handmade items for people and animals in need.

Whether someone gives an hour during a group project, volunteers regularly in one of our chapters or completes projects from home throughout the year, every hour matters. Together, those hours have created an extraordinary record of service.
A Community of 765 Volunteers
Over our first five years, 765 people volunteered with Sew4Service in person or from home. That is enough people to fill more than 15 school buses.
Our volunteers come from many different communities, generations and experience levels. Some have been sewing or working with fiber arts for decades. Others begin with little or no experience and discover that they can learn while helping someone else.

Sew4Service has always been about more than completing projects. It is about creating a welcoming place where individuals and groups can connect, develop confidence, learn useful skills and use their talents for a shared purpose.
Growing to Serve More Communities
In just five years, Sew4Service has grown to include four full chapters in Northeast Ohio, located in Alliance, Euclid, Lakewood and Medina. Each chapter includes a sewing studio and Fabric Stash store, along with a chapter coordinator who oversees its programs, volunteers and daily activities.
Our chapters are much more than places to sew. They provide welcoming spaces where volunteers can meet, build friendships and work together on projects that benefit their communities. They also serve as collection and processing centers where donated fabric, yarn, sewing machines and supplies can be received, sorted, organized and prepared for reuse.

At each chapter, we can teach sewing and fiber-arts classes, prepare charity kits, coordinate volunteer activities, work with community partners and organize the delivery of completed handmade items to local agencies.
In addition to our four chapters, Sew4Service works with several satellite locations that host charity sewing events and other volunteer activities. These partnerships allow people to participate closer to home and help us extend our reach into additional communities.
Together, our chapters and satellite locations provide the local structure needed to turn donations and volunteer time into meaningful action. They are places to learn, create, connect and serve.
Supporting a Wide Variety of Local Agencies
Sew4Service has provided handmade donations to 110 nonprofit and community agencies—the equivalent of partnering with more than two organizations for every week of the year.

We support a wide variety of agencies and programs, including:
Hospitals and healthcare organizations
Nursing homes and senior-service organizations
Programs supporting homebound individuals
Foster-care organizations
Pregnancy centers
Addiction-recovery programs
Pet shelters and animal-rescue organizations
Agencies assisting people and families with low or no income
Through these partnerships, our handmade donations reach newborns and parents, children in foster care, hospital patients, nursing-home residents, older adults living independently, people working toward recovery, families experiencing financial hardship, individuals rebuilding their lives and animals waiting for permanent homes.
Each agency understands the particular needs of the people or animals it serves. By communicating directly with our community partners, we can create and deliver items that are practical, appropriate and genuinely useful.
Eighteen Thousand Handmade Acts of Care
During our first five years, Sew4Service volunteers created and delivered more than 18,000 handmade items to local agencies. That represents nearly 50 acts of care reaching community organizations every day of the year.
Our volunteers create an incredible variety of items, including:
Quilts and crocheted or knitted blankets
Baby items such as burp cloths, receiving blankets and bibs
Crocheted and knitted hats in sizes for newborns through adults
Winter apparel
Market bags and tote bags in many sizes
Pet beds, pet mats and pet toys
Soap savers and dishcloths
Placemats and pillowcases
Fidget quilts and other sensory items
Custom items requested by individual agencies
Each item has its own story. A quilt may comfort a child during a difficult transition. A receiving blanket may welcome a newborn. A warm hat may help someone through a cold Ohio winter. A market bag may provide a practical way for a family to carry groceries and essential supplies. A fidget quilt may offer comfort and engagement to someone living with dementia. A handmade pet bed may give a shelter animal a softer place to rest.

Our ability to create custom-requested items is especially important. When an agency identifies a specific need, our volunteers can often adapt their skills and donated materials to create something that may not be readily available for purchase.
The numbers demonstrate the scale of our work, but every number represents a person, family or animal whose life was touched by something made with care.
Learning and Growing Through Fiber Arts
Education has been an important part of Sew4Service’s work throughout our first five years. We offer classes covering sewing, quilting, knitting, crocheting and other textile arts. Classes are taught in our sewing studios, at libraries and at other community locations, making learning opportunities available throughout the areas we serve.

Recently, we introduced a new class format called Fiberology™, designed to provide a more flexible and personalized learning experience.
Instead of following a predetermined curriculum, completing a specific project or committing to a fixed timeline, Fiberology participants choose what they want to learn and set their own pace.
Participants can bring a project they are already working on, begin something new or focus on a particular skill. They can attend once for help with a specific question, return occasionally as their schedules allow or come regularly to continue building their knowledge and confidence. Each person can pick up where they left off and receive guidance based on their individual interests and experience.

Fiberology participants can explore:
Sewing-machine basics and operation
Hand sewing
Quilting
Crocheting and knitting
Pattern reading and garment construction
Upcycling, alterations and clothing repair
Mending techniques
Serger and embroidery-machine operation
Sewing-machine cleaning, maintenance and troubleshooting
Participants are welcome to bring their own sewing machines so they can become more comfortable using the equipment they have at home. They may also use one of Sew4Service’s machines while learning and improving their skills.
By removing the pressure of a fixed curriculum or timeline, Fiberology helps make textile-arts education more approachable. Whether someone is using a sewing machine for the first time, returning to a skill learned years ago or tackling a more advanced project, our goal is to meet that person where they are and help them become a more capable, creative and confident maker.
Celebrating Five Years at HeART, Soul, Fiesta!
As part of our anniversary celebration, Sew4Service hosted the HeART, Soul, Fiesta! Five-Year Anniversary Fundraiser. The event brought together friends, volunteers, community partners and supporters to celebrate everything our community has accomplished and help make the next chapter of our work possible.

We received more than $10,000 in sponsorships and raised more than $20,000 in total for Sew4Service’s programs. These funds will help us continue providing textile-arts education, meaningful volunteer opportunities, affordable access to supplies and equipment, and handmade donations for local nonprofit and community agencies.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who attended, donated, sponsored the event, purchased tickets, contributed auction items, volunteered or helped spread the word. The success of the fundraiser reflected the generosity and enthusiasm that have sustained Sew4Service throughout our first five years.
We extend a special thank-you to our sponsors and supporters:

Many other supporters
We are equally grateful to the many other donors and supporters who have contributed financially, provided materials, attended our events, volunteered their time, shopped in our Fabric Stash stores and shared our work with others.
Your support makes it possible for Sew4Service to preserve and teach textile-arts skills, provide accessible creative opportunities, keep usable materials out of landfills and transform donated supplies into thousands of handmade items for people and animals in need.
Looking Toward the Next Five Years
These milestones belong to everyone who has been part of Sew4Service.
They belong to the person who donated a box of fabric, the volunteer who completed a project at home, the student who learned to sew during a group service project, the technician who repaired a donated sewing machine, the teacher who patiently helped someone develop a new skill, the customer who shopped in one of our stores and the community agency that placed a handmade item into the hands of someone who needed it.
Together, we have shown what can happen when creativity and service come together. Donated materials find new purpose. Traditional textile-arts skills are preserved and shared. Volunteers discover meaningful ways to contribute. Schools, businesses and community groups experience the value of working together in service. Local agencies receive practical, heartfelt support.
As we begin our next five years, we look forward to welcoming more individuals and groups into this growing community and finding new ways to learn, create and serve together.
Thank you for helping Sew4Service turn generosity into action—one donation, one volunteer hour and one handmade item at a time.
