Stepping into the Fabric Stash Store operated by Sew4Service, Laura Kidder was delighted to rekindle cherished memories and inspired to learn a new skill. As the Building Manager of Shore Cultural Centre, she makes it a priority to visit each of her tenants and check on their businesses. On this particular visit, she was enchanted by the colorful array of yarns and thought, “Wow, I’d love to learn how to crochet.”
For Laura, learning to crochet was a perfect way to keep her hands busy while resting her knee. True to her determined nature, she purchased three balls of yarn and began her journey using her mother’s beloved crochet hook.
Crocheting is a craft that is perfect for beginners, requiring just a few essential supplies. Laura began with a basic chain stitch and instructional YouTube videos, quickly building her confidence. She created a rose and a sunflower before progressing to ear warmers, scarves, and other Christmas gifts. “They were filled with love and far from perfect,” Laura commented. Her skills have since blossomed, and she now feels ready to learn more advanced techniques.

Laura fondly recalls her mother crocheting blankets for her children, and she cherishes the doll her mother crafted which sits proudly on her bed as a constant reminder of her. “I often wondered how she managed to create those,” Laura reflects, adding, “She would be so proud of me today.”
