More Than a Quilt Kit: Stitching Together Pride, Community, and Belonging

Some projects begin with a business plan.

Others begin with a simple question: What can we create from the fabric scraps that generous people have donated?

At Sew4Service, we strive to make the most of every donation. Even the smallest pieces of fabric have potential, and we're always looking for creative ways to transform them into something meaningful rather than sending them to the landfill.

When we discovered the Progress Pride Quilt Pattern by Geeky Bobbin in Canada, we knew we had found something special.

The pattern is beautifully designed to use small pieces of fabric, making it ideal for the colorful assortment of scraps we receive through donations. Rather than requiring large cuts of matching fabric, each quilt celebrates variety. Every color section is made from many different prints, creating a quilt that is vibrant, unique, and full of personality.

It was the perfect combination of creativity and sustainability.

Because the pattern contains hundreds of precisely cut squares and triangles, we decided to create ready-to-sew quilt kits. Using our AccuQuilt cutting system, volunteers accurately cut every piece, making it much easier for quilters to begin sewing immediately. Each kit contains fabrics from up to 17 different prints for every color of the Progress Pride Flag, creating combinations that would be time consuming for most people to assemble on their own.

Before creating the kits, we contacted Geeky Bobbin to ask permission to package and sell them. They graciously approved our request with one meaningful condition: that a portion of every kit sold be donated to an organization serving the LGBTQ+ community.

They chose Rainbow Railroad, an international nonprofit that helps LGBTQI+ individuals escape persecution and violence around the world.

We were honored to continue that commitment, and today every Progress Pride Quilt Kit supports both Sew4Service's mission and Rainbow Railroad's life-changing work.

But as meaningful as that partnership is, we've learned that the greatest impact of these kits isn't measured by how many we sell.

It's measured in the stories people share.

More Than Fabric

One of our volunteers recently described why this project has become so meaningful to her.

"I love helping with our Progress Pride quilt kits and Pride events for so many reasons. I've been fortunate to have friends and family members in the LGBTQ+ community who have been an important part of my life. Their love, inclusivity, and compassion are constant reminders of the beauty of embracing people for who they are and the unwavering support they show one another.
There's also something incredibly special about the humor and resilience that define this community—a reminder of how love and laughter can light up even the darkest spaces. The boldness and vibrancy of Pride displays and celebrations reflect an amazing mix of creativity, joy, and self-expression. Our Progress Pride quilt kits provide another way to create, display, and show support.
I also love that the quilts are bold, colorful, and wonderfully scrappy, which fits my quilting style perfectly. It's an honor to volunteer my time creating these kits and participating in activities that celebrate, encourage, and uplift the LGBTQ+ community."

Her words remind us that every kit begins long before someone sits down at a sewing machine. It begins with volunteers who choose to give their time because they believe in creating something that will bring comfort, encouragement, and visibility to others.

A Quilt That Says "You Belong Here"

Another customer shared a story that has stayed with us.

She purchased a lap-size Progress Pride Quilt Kit because several of her children's friends are members of the LGBTQ+ community. Her goal wasn't simply to make another quilt—it was to create something that would quietly communicate a message every time someone visited her home.

She planned to keep the finished quilt in her living room so that if one of those friends wanted to curl up on the couch, they could wrap themselves in something that said, without words:

You belong here. You are welcome here. You are loved here.

That simple act of hospitality demonstrates something quilts have always done. They provide warmth, comfort, and security. In this case, the quilt also becomes a visible reminder that every guest is valued and accepted.

Handmade Gifts with a Powerful Message

Another customer approached the kits from a different perspective.

She purchased six Progress Pride Quilt Kits in a variety of sizes because she already knew who each quilt would be for.

Each recipient was someone she loved deeply—a family member or close friend whom she wanted to encourage with a handmade gift that expressed acceptance, support, and unconditional love.

She wasn't simply making quilts.

She was creating lasting reminders that each person mattered.

Every quilt would represent hours of cutting, piecing, sewing, pressing, and quilting. Every stitch would communicate what words sometimes cannot: You are important to me, and I want you to have something made especially for you.

Those are the kinds of gifts people remember for a lifetime.

Every Piece Has Value

Perhaps that's one of the reasons this project resonates so deeply with us at Sew4Service.

Our mission has always been about seeing value where others may not.

We rescue donated fabric that someone else no longer needs and transform it into something beautiful.

The Progress Pride Quilt carries that same message in a different way. Hundreds of individual pieces—each unique, each different—come together to create something stronger, brighter, and more beautiful than any one piece could become on its own.

It is a wonderful reminder that diversity isn't something to be hidden. It is something that strengthens the finished work.

No two quilts are ever exactly alike.

Just like no two people are exactly alike.

Since 2024 we have donated over $1000 to Rainbow Railroad through the sale of our Progress Pride Quilt Kits.

More Than a Quilt

At first glance, our Progress Pride Quilt Kits are simply fabric, carefully cut and packaged for quilting.

But to us, they represent so much more.

They represent volunteers who generously donate their time.

They represent quilters who invest hours creating something meaningful.

They represent families who want loved ones to know they are accepted.

They represent homes where every guest is welcomed.

They represent partnerships that extend beyond our own community through support for Rainbow Railroad.

And they remind us that something as simple as a handmade quilt can become a powerful expression of kindness, inclusion, and hope.

At Sew4Service, we believe sewing changes lives.

Sometimes that happens by teaching someone a new skill.

Sometimes it happens by rescuing fabric from the landfill.

And sometimes it happens one colorful quilt at a time—creating a lasting reminder that everyone deserves to feel seen, supported, and at home.
