Creativity Meets Community Service: Sew4Service Connects with Junior Volunteers
A sewing machine, a few fabric scraps, and a willingness to help can turn into something meaningful. At Magnified Giving’s Northeast Ohio Youth Leadership & Service Conference, high school students joined Sew4Service to transform donated fabric scraps into pet mats for the Euclid Animal Shelter—connecting creativity, sustainability, and community service.
Sew4Service was pleased to present at the conference and bring sewing machines so students could experience our mission firsthand. Together, we demonstrated how learning a practical skill can also be an opportunity to care for others.

What Is Magnified Giving?
Magnified Giving is an educational nonprofit that helps young people understand philanthropy and discover how they can contribute to their communities.
Through its Youth Philanthropy Program, service-learning resources, and other programs, students learn to use their time, talents, and financial resources to support causes they care about. Its Youth Philanthropy Program also gives participating student groups the opportunity to research local nonprofits and select an organization to receive a grant.
This approach gives students an active role in understanding community needs and making decisions about how to help. They have something valuable to contribute today, whether through volunteering, sharing a skill, or advocating for a cause.

A Conference That Connects Learning with Action
Hosted by Magnified Giving on September 25, 2026, at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, the Northeast Ohio Youth Leadership & Service Conference brought together students, educators, and nonprofit representatives. The event combined speakers, interactive breakout sessions, a volunteer fair, and hands-on service activities to encourage young people to become involved in their communities. Held in observance of the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, it connected remembrance with positive action.
For Sew4Service, it was an opportunity to introduce students to the intersection of textile arts and community service—and invite them to participate.
Fabric Scraps Become Comfort for Shelter Cats
During our hands-on activity, students helped us make pet mats using fabric scraps. By upcycling these materials, we gave leftover fabric a new purpose while creating useful items for a local shelter.
The completed mats were donated to the Euclid Animal Shelter for use in its cat room. This simple project connected several parts of our mission: teaching sewing skills, putting donated materials to good use, and making handmade items that meet community needs.
Students could see a direct connection between their effort and the finished donation. Their time and creativity helped turn scraps into something that would provide comfort for shelter cats.

Learning Through Service
High school service-learning programs connect classroom learning with real community needs. Students investigate issues, plan ways to help, take action, and reflect on what their service means to themselves and others. That reflection helps them understand both the need they addressed and the value of their contribution.
At Sew4Service, these experiences also create opportunities to practice patience, problem-solving, teamwork, and practical sewing skills. Learning to sew can help young people become more independent, from repairing clothing to finding creative uses for materials they already have.
Junior Volunteers Are Welcome
Sew4Service welcomes junior volunteers ages 13–17 at our chapter locations in Euclid, Lakewood, Medina, and Alliance. Teens can volunteer as part of a high school service-learning program, work toward service hours, or simply explore how their creative interests can benefit their community.
Junior volunteers also have opportunities to work alongside senior volunteers, learning from experienced makers and building connections across generations.
Interested students should contact their chapter coordinator or sign up for a volunteer orientation to begin the process of becoming a junior volunteer.

Thank You for Your Support
Thank you to Magnified Giving for bringing students and community organizations together, and to the students who helped us create pet mats for the Euclid Animal Shelter. We look forward to welcoming more young people into our community of volunteers!
Our work with student service-learning programs is made possible through grants and financial support from Magnified Giving, the Perry High School Service Learning Program, and the Buser Family Foundation. Their generosity helps Sew4Service provide hands-on opportunities for young people to build practical skills, use their creativity, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
